Arcadia is the mountainous interior of the Peloponnese, in southern Greece, with Tripoli as its capital. It runs from the fir forests of Mount Mainalo down to a short, steep coastline on the Argolic Gulf. It is the Arcadia of the pastoral idyll — the word that entered every European language as a synonym for unspoiled country.

By road. There is no airport in the region and no rail service worth planning around. From Athens it is roughly two hours on the A7 motorway; Kalamata airport is the closer gateway for the south of the region.

Indicative driving times to central Arcadia: Athens 2h, Athens airport 2h30, Nafplio 1h, Mystras 1h, Kalamata 1h15, Olympia 2h, Patras 2h15. Mountain roads are good but slow — allow more than the map suggests.

In practice, yes. Public transport between villages is limited, and our member villages are spread across three separate mountain areas. A car is what makes Arcadia work as a destination.

April to June and September to October are the best of the year: stable weather, full rivers or harvest, and empty trails.

November to March is a genuine winter destination — fireplaces, snow on Mainalo, a small ski centre. Greeks have known this for decades; foreigners have not found it yet.

July and August are hot, but markedly cooler than the coast, and the gorges stay shaded.

Two nights is the minimum for the region to register at all. Three or four lets you see one mountain area properly — the villages, a gorge, a winery, a monastery — without spending the whole time driving.

No. Walking is one of our four pillars, not the destination itself.

The Temple of Apollo Epikourios at Bassae was the first Greek monument inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, in 1986. Ancient Mantineia, Tegea, Lykosoura and the great theatre of Megalopoli are within an hour of each other. Add the monasteries built into the cliffs of the Lousios gorge, the open-air Water Power Museum at Dimitsana, the Frankish castle at Karytaina, the Mantinia wine country, and the sport-climbing walls above Leonidio.

Up to around thirty seats, yes. Above that, several of the best villages are not reachable and you should plan a transfer for the final stretch.

If you are not sure which house suits you, write to us first. We know the properties and we will say plainly which is which, rather than send you somewhere that will disappoint you.

Because a small guesthouse keeps far more of what you pay when the booking does not pass through an intermediary. In a region of family businesses, that difference is what keeps the lights on out of season.

Every member is a business rooted in Arcadia, working to a shared compliance guide for accommodation and activity providers. We describe each one honestly — standards vary the way small independent properties always vary, and pretending otherwise would help nobody.

No. Arcadia Hospitality Network is a non-profit organisation bringing together guesthouses, producers, wineries and outdoor-activity professionals of Arcadia, with one purpose: to establish the region as a European destination for authentic, slow travel.

Businesses with their headquarters or a branch in Arcadia. Guesthouses and hotels, food and drink producers, wineries, restaurants and kafeneia, and professionals offering outdoor activities.

There is a one-time joining fee. Write to us for the current figure and what it covers.

A presence in our member directory and on our channels; inclusion in the trade missions we run abroad, such as the Netherlands in January 2027 and the Adventure Travel Show in London in January 2027; introductions to tour operators and travel media who ask us for the region; and participation in shared projects such as Arcadia Trails and the Arcadian Breakfast.

And, plainly: a collective effort to keep the mountain villages of Arcadia alive.
