A footpath to the cliff monasteries of Arcadia

Where is Arcadia?

Not a postcard. The mountain heart of the Peloponnese — and the people who live there.

Arcadia is the mountainous centre of the Peloponnese, about two hours by car from Athens. It is the land of three mountains — Menalon, Parnon and Lykaion — of stone villages lived in all year round, fir and chestnut forests, gorges with monasteries set into the rock, and a coastline where Parnon runs down to the Myrtoan Sea at Leonidio and Paralio Astros.

For three thousand years “Arcadia” has meant a place of simple, unhurried life. The real place is still here — and it is not a museum.

Four seasons, one slow journey

When to visit Arcadia — and how to get there

Spring — wild greens and green slopes.
Summer — village festivals and cool mountain nights.
Autumn — chestnuts, the grape harvest and the forests changing colour.
Winter — snow on Ostrakina and long evenings by the fire.

Fly into Athens and drive about two hours into the Peloponnese. A car gives you the freedom to move between villages — but in Arcadia the best way to see a place is still on foot, along the same waymarked paths that connect our stays.

Arcadia's eastern spine: chestnut villages like Kastanitsa, the ruins of Prastos, and the red cliffs that run down to the sea at Leonidio.

The bare ridges of Mount Lykaion in southwestern Arcadia

Lykaion

The mountain of Zeus's oldest altar, the castle of Karytaina above the Alpheios, and the villages of Isari and Vasta on its slopes.

Visiting Arcadia: questions travellers ask

Is Arcadia worth visiting?
If you are looking for mountains, villages and food from the valley in front of you — rather than beaches and crowds — yes. Arcadia is one of the least crowded parts of mainland Greece.

How many days do I need?
Three days give you one mountain; a week lets you cross from Menalon to Parnon or Lykaion at a slow pace.

Does Arcadia have a coast?
Yes. On its eastern side, Parnon reaches the Myrtoan Sea at Leonidio and Paralio Astros.

Who are the Arcadia Hospitality Network?
