The Idea: The Forgotten Paths of the Peloponnese

Modern roads bypassed these wonders, but this journey puts you right back in the heart of them. It is an invitation to explore by e-bike, on foot, and on horseback. You will hike the dark, stone-cut tunnels of a metre-gauge railway that carried the region for a century and now stands beautifully silent. You will trace mountain paths tied to local fairy tales, and ride out beneath the towering ruins of Karytaina. Stone bridges that carry nothing but echoes, and a tranquil lake that nobody is in a hurry to reach—this is the very essence of slow travel.

Your base is Leontari for all three nights. No packing and repacking, no transfers at dawn — just one village that gets familiar, and a different direction each morning.

• Day 1 · E-Bikes & Hidden Tunnels

  The villages where Arcadia spirit thrives

  Kick things off by gliding through the stunning countryside on an e-bike from Leontari to Paradisia! Roam the charming village, take in the serene beauty of Mavrolimna lake, and step back in time at the old train station.

  

  The Grand Finale? A thrilling hike along an abandoned railway line! We’ll hand you a flashlight as you venture into dark, stone-cut, century-old railway tunnels winding all the way to Chranoi and Isaris. (Transfer back to Leontari included.)

• Day 2 · Miracles & Mountain Villages

  Vasta to Isari — via Agia Theodora, the girl who became a church

  After a quick morning transfer to Vasta, you’ll step right into a breathtaking local fairy tale! Your hike begins in Vasta and leads you toward the miraculous little church of Agia Theodora. According to local lore, Theodora was a brave young girl who disguised herself as a soldier to protect her village. Her beautiful, tragic final wish? “Let my body become a church, my blood a river, and my hair the trees.”

  

  Prepare to be amazed as you see her wish come to life—seventeen massive oak trees grow miraculously straight out of the chapel’s tiny stone roof, with a crystal-clear spring bubbling right beneath your feet!

  From this magical spot, you’ll hike through stunning Peloponnesian landscapes to the old Isaris train station, winding your way into the heart of Isaris village before catching your transfer back to Leontari for a well-earned rest.

• Day 3 · Castles & Gallops

  Riding the Alpheios beneath Karytaina

  Channel your inner knight! Today, we head to the medieval marvel of Karytaina—often called the “Toledo of Greece” for its dramatic stone houses clinging to the mountainside.

  

  Here, you’ll saddle up with Stefi’s Equestrian Tours for an unforgettable horseback riding experience that perfectly embraces the rhythm of slow travel. You’ll trot along the lush, sweeping banks of the mythical Alpheios River, riding right beneath the towering, spectacular ruins of a genuine 13th-century Frankish castle. The gentle clip-clop of hooves, the rushing river water, and the towering fortress above create a truly magical, timeless atmosphere.

  Wrap up your epic Peloponnesian adventure where ancient history meets monumental scale! On your final morning, step back in time at the magnificent archaeological site of Megalopolis—once envisioned as the grand capital of ancient Arcadia.

  

  Stand right center stage at the Ancient Theater of Megalopolis—one of the largest outdoor theaters ever built in the ancient Greek world, boasting a breathtaking capacity of up to 20,000 spectators and legendary acoustics. Right alongside it, explore the fascinating ruins of the Thersilion, the legendary assembly hall known as the “Hall of the Ten Thousand,” where representatives from across the ancient Arcadian cities once gathered to shape history.

  • The Scale of Antiquity — take a moment to walk the massive grounds and look out toward the horizon, imagining the thousands of citizens who once filled these stone seats for grand theatrical performances and political assemblies alike.
