The Idea: One Silversmiths’ Village, Three Ways Out

Stemnitsa sits right at the mouth of the Lousios Gorge — a position that makes it a basecamp rather than just another stop. Mountain villages within e-bike range in one direction, cliffside monasteries on foot in another, and a medieval castle with its horses within reach to the south.

Your base is Stemnitsa for all three nights. No packing and repacking, no transfers at dawn — just one stone-built village that gets familiar, and a different way to move through Arcadia each morning.

The rhythm

Day 1 · The Silver Village

Stone lanes, a working silversmiths’ school, three nights to get to know it

Settle into Stemnitsa for all three nights — a stone-built village stacked into the slope above the Lousios gorge, known across Greece simply as “the silver village.” Take your first walk through the old town at your own pace: stone mansions, narrow lanes, the sound of the river below.

The village that still works silver. Since 1976, Stemnitsa’s Silversmithing School has trained goldsmiths in a craft the village has practiced for generations — the workshops are still in session most weekdays.
Don’t miss
- The Folklore Museum — set inside the 18th-century Hatzi mansion, three rooms deep: the workshops, a traditional house interior, and an exhibition of everyday objects.
- Welcome dinner — a network taverna, local Arcadian ingredients, and a first look at the mountains you’ll be moving through for the next three days.
Day 2 · Wheels Between Three Villages

Stemnitsa to Dimitsana to Zatouna, with a cave church in between

Swap your legs for an e-bike and cover in one easy morning what would take two days on foot. Head north out of Stemnitsa on the road toward Dimitsana as Arcadia’s mountains open up around every bend.

First stop, Aimyalon Monastery. A short detour off the main road brings you to a monastery founded in 1608, built into a natural cave in the cliff face — its tiny single-nave church, invisible until you’re standing in front of it, still holds its original carved iconostasis and frescoes.

Ride on to Dimitsana — once known as “the nation’s powder-keg” for the gunpowder mills that armed the 1821 Revolution — for lunch above the gorge, then freewheel out to Zatouna, a quiet village perched over the Lousios valley just beyond it. (Return to Stemnitsa included.)
Day 3 · Into the Gorge

Two cliffside monasteries, and a trail that ends at Arcadia’s water-powered industry

Lace up for the real thing: the Lousios Gorge’s signature trail, around 12km and the best-signed path in the region, dropping steeply from Stemnitsa into the ravine before climbing the far side toward Dimitsana.

First, Prodromou Monastery — built directly into the vertical rock of the gorge, its wooden galleries hanging over open air. It sheltered Kolokotronis and his fighters during the 1821 Revolution. A little further on, the path crosses to the opposite bank for Philosophou: the Old Monastery, founded in 963 AD and one of the oldest Byzantine monuments in Greece, and the New Monastery built above it in the 17th century.

The trail brings you down at the edge of Dimitsana, right at the door of the Open-Air Water Power Museum — watermills, gunpowder mills and tanneries once driven by the same river you’ve been walking beside all day. (Transfer back to Stemnitsa included.)
Don’t miss
- Well-marked, shaded, no technical difficulty — but a genuine effort: figure five hours of walking, steepest right out of Stemnitsa and again into Dimitsana.
- The Water Power Museum — give it an hour before heading back: working models of the mills that once ran the length of this river.
Day 4 · Makers & Horses

A revived village, a medieval bridge, and a ride beneath a castle

On the way south to Karytaina, stop in Psari — a once-abandoned mountain village brought back to life by seven young Arcadians. Their workshop, Arkadiani, turns local produce into traditional sweets, pasta, herbs and preserves; sit down for lunch at their restaurant, cooked from their own garden.

Then, Karytaina — sometimes called the “Toledo of Greece” for its stone houses stacked beneath a 13th-century Frankish castle. Saddle up with Stefi’s Equestrian Tours, based right under the medieval bridge, for a ride along the banks of the Alfeios River with the castle towering above you.

- Arkadiani’s little museum — old books and kitchen tools, tucked in alongside the workshop and restaurant.
- Karytaina’s medieval bridge — before or after your ride, a look at the stone bridge that has spanned the Alfeios for centuries.
- Karytaina’s cobbled alleys — a slow stroll past the stone houses and hidden Byzantine churches before heading back to Stemnitsa.
