The place

Stavropoulos Dairy has been making Greek graviera in Karatoula since 1895, the craft passed down through four generations of the family. Every wheel is made with local sheep’s milk from the surrounding slopes of Menalon, whose climate gives the cheese its ideal natural ageing. The graviera — dense, naturally rinded, with a distinctive, memorable taste — has won Gold at the Mediterranean Taste Awards 2025 and the Excellent Taste Awards 2025. The dairy also makes myzithra, produced in only small quantities each year straight from the graviera process, and a traditional feta rich with authentic flavour.

Cheese Tasting

Taste the family's Graviera Karatoula and dry myzithra straight from the dairy — the same recipe the Stavropoulos family has kept unchanged since 1895, still warm with the story behind it.

Watch the Cheese Being Made

Follow the traditional cheesemaking process step by step — milk brought in from the surrounding slopes of Menalon, curdled in copper cauldrons, hand-pressed and left to age — the same craft practised for four generations.

Roam Karatoula Village

Karatoula sits on the edge of Mount Menalon, a quiet mountain village with a strong pastoral character — flocks, stone walls and open highland air. At its centre stands the old stone-built primary school, a small landmark of the village's history. From here, easy routes lead down to nearby Vangos and on to Megalopolis, or further along toward the Elissonas gorge.
