Valtesiniko: Beneath the Cliffside Monastery
Valtesiniko’s beautifully preserved stone houses gather around the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin, one stop on the Menalon Trail between Magouliana and Lagkadia.
Above the village, the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos is built directly into the rock face, its chapel carved from a cave and reached by a wooden staircase bolted into the stone. Still home to a small community of monks, it looks out over the Kapsali gorge — the kind of view that explains why someone chose to build a monastery here in the first place.
