Vytina is Arcadia’s classic mountain resort — a village of stone houses and steep slate roofs set among the fir forests of Mainalon, at an altitude that keeps it cool even in the height of summer and turns it into a fireplace-and-snow retreat every winter.

The village has practiced woodcarving for generations, and its workshops still shape furniture and icon frames from the timber of the surrounding forest. Vytina is also one of the key stops on the certified Menalon Trail, the long-distance path that links it onward to Elati, Piana, Dimitsana and Stemnitsa through some of the oldest forest in the Peloponnese.

A short drive down the valley lies ancient Gortys, where the Lousios river runs past the remains of an Asclepieion — a sanctuary and healing centre dedicated to the god of medicine, built beside the same cold springs that still feed the valley today.

Staying in Vytina means mountain air, chestnut and mushroom season on the menu, and a village built for slow mornings and long walks.
